Greek yogurt is also known as strained yogurt, yogurt cheese, bag of yogurtOr granulated yogurt. It is prepared by straining regular yogurt through cheesecloth to remove excess whey, resulting in a thick, creamy yogurt. Greek yogurt is used in many desserts, marinades and even eaten as is.

This recipe is what I came up with a few days ago to make Greek yogurt. Follow all the steps mentioned and you will have the perfect thick Greek yogurt at home.

To make Greek yogurt, use a few spoons of yogurt from your previous batch. You can use store-bought yogurt if you don’t have leftover yogurt or if you are making yogurt for the first time. Although store bought curd can be used. But it’s best to use homemade yogurt to make Greek yogurt or any yogurt for the perfect thick set.

2) Once the milk boils. Remove it from the heat and let the milk heat up. This will take a few hours.

If you insert your finger into the milk, it should be warm to the touch. The temperature of the milk will be 185 degrees F (85 degrees C) to be exact.

3) Now take your yogurt in a small bowl and whisk until creamy. Pour it over the lukewarm milk.

4) Mix well using a whisk. Cover the pot loosely. let the milk ferment at room temperature for at least 10 to 12 hours or overnight. The longer you ferment, the more sour the yogurt will become.

5)Now the yogurt is set and thickened.

6) Place a strainer over a bowl, line the strainer with cheesecloth.

7) Pour all the yogurt set onto the cheesecloth. Wrap the gauze over the yogurt.

8)Place a weight on the strainer. I poured water into another bowl and placed it on the cheesecloth. Transfer it to the refrigerator and let it sit for 4 hours.

9) After 4 hours, this is what the Greek yogurt looks like. Thick and creamy.

10) This is the excess whey water collected from the yogurt. You can use it for baking.

Now place a weight on the cheesecloth to squeeze the yogurt. I used a bowl filled with water. Transfer it to the refrigerator and let it drain in the refrigerator for 4 hours.

  • By now the whey should have collected in the bowl below. Thick and creamy Greek yogurt is ready. Transfer it to an airtight container, store it in the refrigerator, and use it as needed.
