But I can assure you that you will be able to finish all of this from start to finish in less than 30 minutes. I made it with just chocolate cake, cherries, chocolate cream and whipped cream.

To make life easier, I used a store-bought chocolate cake instead of a homemade one. But you can make any of my simple chocolate cakes. Check my easy chocolate cake.

If I could get fresh cherries, I would have preferred that. Since I couldn’t find fresh cherries, I used maraschino cherries in syrup.

You can use pitted and halved fresh cherries, cooked with sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch and water until thickened. This can be used for cherry filling.

To dip the cake, I used cherry syrup since I made it for my kids. But you can use any liquor like rum.

The custard layer is a simple chocolate custard. I used cornstarch, sugar, cocoa powder and cooked with milk until thickened. I used salt and vanilla in the custard for flavor.

Once all this is ready. You can assemble it in a large trifle bowl or use an individual trifle glass.

Ingredients

  • Chocolate cake – use a rich chocolate cake to prepare this trifle. You can make it from scratch using a store-bought cake.
  • Maraschino cherries – I used cherries soaked in syrup. I used the syrup to soak my sponge. You can use alcohol instead of syrup.
  • Milk – use whole milk to make the chocolate custard.
  • Cocoa – Unsweetened cocoa adds the rich chocolate flavor to the custard.
  • Cornflour – in this recipe, cornstarch is added as a thickener. You can use custard powder instead of cornstarch.
  • Flavors – a pinch of salt, vanilla is added as a flavoring.
  • Dark chocolate – Chopped dark chocolate is added to the hot chocolate cream and mixed until melted.
  • Whipped cream – whip the cream with the vanilla and icing sugar until firm. this is used as a garnish.

1) Take the whipped cream, icing sugar, vanilla extract in a bowl and use an electric mixer or whisk to whip until thick and stiff.

2) Whip the cream until stiff peaks form.

3) I used maraschino cherries soaked in syrup. You can use pitted and halved fresh cherries, cooked with sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch and water until thickened.

4) Since these cherries come with syrup. Filter the cherry syrup. It is used to dip the sponge cake (chocolate cake).

Make a chocolate cream

5)Put the sugar, cornstarch and cocoa powder in a saucepan.

6) Mix it using a whisk until it is homogeneous.

7) Pour in the milk and whisk until well combined. Now put it on the stove and cook until the mixture starts to thicken. continue whisking to prevent lumps from forming.

6) Once thickened, remove from heat and add the chopped dark chocolate.

8) Add a pinch of salt.

9) Add the vanilla extract and mix well.

10)Here is your chocolate cream. Place it in the refrigerator to cool completely.

Trifle assembly

11) Take a transparent glass serving dish. Arrange the chocolate cake at the bottom of the serving dish.

12) Pour a drizzle of cherry syrup over the cake.

13) Add a little chocolate custard on the biscuit.

14)Add some cherries on top.

15) Place a little chocolate cream on the cherries.

16) Place a few slices of chocolate cake on top.

17) Garnish with whipped cream, pieces of chocolate, cherries. Place it in the refrigerator and let it sit for 2 to 3 hours. Serve.

Instructions

  • Take maraschino cherries soaked in syrup. Filter the syrup and reserve it, we will use it to soak the sponge cake.

Add some chocolate custard, cherries, more custard and top with a few slices of chocolate cake. Now spoon some whipped cream on top. Decorate with chocolate, cherries, mint leaves and edible flowers.

  • Place it in the refrigerator and let it sit for 3 to 4 hours. Serve cold.
