I love the combination of aloo and mochai, also known as fava beans and hyacinth beans, along with a little sweet coconut masala. It is a popular South Indian food combination and simple to prepare.

It tastes good when mixed with hot rice and ghee. My little one loves it. I was lucky enough to get my hands on these beautiful fresh purple Moshai at my supermarket. I immediately picked up a packet and made this curry. If you can’t get fresh ones, you can also make them with dried ones.

This is a simple curry made with coconut, mochai kottai and potatoes. The curry has a coconut masala that flavors the entire dish.

You can mix this with hot rice and ghee and enjoy this curry.

Step by step photos

1) Take the potatoes, remove the skin and cut them into large wedges.

2) Grab your fresh mochai. Rinse them very well. If using dried mochai, soak them overnight in water before cooking them separately.

3) Put the potatoes and mochai in a pressure cooker, add a little water and salt. Pressure cook for 2 whistles, simmer for 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and let the steam escape on its own.

4) Open the cooker and check if the potatoes and mochai are cooked. Cancel.

5) Take the coconut in a blender.

6) Add cumin, garlic, dry red chilies and turmeric to a blender.

7) Add a little water and make a slightly coarse puree. Cancel.

8) Heat coconut oil in a kadai. Add mustard, dry red chilli, curry leaves and let them sizzle.

9) Add the cooked potatoes and mochai with any cooking liquid. Filter if there is too much liquid.

10)Add coconut masala and salt.

11) Mix well and cook until everything is dry.

12) Serve hot with rice.
