The BEST things to do in London at Christmas

November 9, 2025

Imagine walking into a Christmas movie! This is what London looks like in December. Even the most uncompromising Londoner would struggle to remain a Scrooge here.

Every year people ask me THE list. These are what I think are the best things to do in London at Christmas. That’s it. Every year since 2012 I’ve been doing Christmas activities here and writing about it ever since. From light trails to candlelit concerts, I’ve seen it all.

These are the ones that still make me feel like I’ve walked into a Christmas movie. Every time.

If you’re planning a Christmas trip to London, you’ve probably already been overwhelmed by endless bucket lists written by people who’ve spent a weekend here.

The truth? Some of the big attractions are overrated, but the good ones still capture that unique magic. BUT you need to know where to go and how to plan it.

So here is my definitive guide to the best things to do in London at Christmas. These are experiences worth your time, your money, and your camera roll (well, a data plan anyway).

Magical experiences in London

See London’s famous Christmas lights

Bond Street, Regent Street, Carnaby and Covent Garden are each growing in their own way, with the luxurious glamor of Bond Street and the themed exhibitions of Carnaby leading the way.

London insider tip: Meet around 3:30 p.m. to take day and night photos as the city transforms. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, a London Christmas Lights Bus Tour is the best way to see everything without jostling for space on the sidewalk.

Christmas at Kew

Kew Gardens is transformed every December with laser shows, light tunnels and fire gardens set to music. It’s one of the most magical festive events in London. And it sells quickly.

London insider tip: Reserve a table at Press the line before your visit. It’s the only pub located within a London Underground station and is the perfect pre-show stop for dinner or drinks. It’s also a Young’s Pub, one of our dining favorites. We’ve already previewed their Christmas menu range this year and it’s a real success!

winter wonderland

Both a funfair and a festive getaway, Winter Wonderland has it all. There you will find a Bavarian village, an ice bar, a circus and a giant wheel. Londoners think it has become very expensive and are targeting it a lot on social media. There is truth in that. But you have to go at least once!

London insider tip: Arrive around 1 p.m. on weekdays to enjoy the day and evening views. Buy a transportation and food package online in advance to save money.

Festive Food and Drink Activities in London this Christmas

enjoy a Christmas afternoon tea

London offers afternoon tea all year round, but December adds extra sparkle and warmth. Christmas cakes, spicy scones and champagne. Try the Conrad St James, the Royal Horseguards Hotel or the Intercontinental Park Lane. You can even go there on a main road bus!

London insider tip: Choose a Christmas afternoon tea in a location close to your other plans to save time and travel smarter. There are so many great options that location matters more than finding the “best.” Remember, “best” is only determined by what you’re looking for. That’s what I show you how to determine in the best afternoon teas in London.

have a festive dinner and drink at the pub

You can’t have a Christmas in London without a proper pub visit. Churchill weapons in Kensington is worth the detour just for its exterior! It is covered in hundreds of lights and Christmas trees. Inside you will find excellent Thai cuisine. It’s a Fuller’s pub, one of the few groups in London that regularly serves good food.

London insider tip: Reserve a table if you plan to eat. The decorating crowds are intense once the lights are turned on. And if you’re not sure what to expect in terms of ordering, drinking and British culture in this atmosphere, read my Tips for Visiting a London Pub for help in advance.

visit Fortnum & Mason

If you love food, shopping and Christmas, you may never leave Fortnum’s. From tea and biscuits to hampers and sparkling wine, everything here feels like a treat. The windows are worth the detour. And the staircase is always a decorative delight!

London insider tip: Allow extra time. It’s beautiful but it’s busy and the queues for hampers and tea move slowly.

Classic Christmas Traditions

visit London’s Christmas markets

London’s markets are all about atmosphere, fun and festive food, and a bit of shopping.

  • London Bridgeunrivaled views of Tower Bridge and the skyline
  • Southbank Centerideal for a drink and a stroll by the river
  • St Katharine Quays Victorian Villagenew this year, with gin and independent brands

London insider tip: Don’t expect European-style originality. You’ll find the most unique stalls at St Katharine Docks, while London Bridge provides the best setting for photos. To find out more about what to expect (and what to look out for!), take an in-depth look at the London Bridge Christmas Market. You will also find some interesting ideas to consider in advance in my ideas on the best things to buy in London.

go ice skating

Somerset House is London’s classic ice rink. But Battersea Power Station’s Glide experience feels newer and less cluttered. Even if you don’t skate, it’s worth the trip for the view and atmosphere.

London insider tip: Sliding is best in the middle of the week. You can watch from the sidelines with a drink and still feel part of it. Plus, I think this one is best for families.

Culture and Entertainment Things to do in London for Christmas

Hogwarts in the snow

The Warner Bros Studio Tour is getting a makeover for Christmas, with snowy settings and the Great Hall dressed for the season.

London insider tip: If tickets are sold out, check out coach tour packages. Operators often hold advance allocations that include transportation and entry. I also provide a detailed review of your options for how to get to the Harry Potter Studios Tour on this website.

see a festive show

London’s theater scene shines brightest at Christmas. Classics like A Christmas Carol, Elf the musical And The Nutcracker never fails to impress.

London insider tip: To use TodayTix for discounts and last minute places. You can often get premium tickets for less if you’re flexible. I give opinions on the sales they make in my weekly newsletter, sent on Sundays!

attend a candlelight concert

These concerts mix classical music and film music by the light of flickering candles in venues like Southwark Cathedral or Central Hall Westminster.

London insider tip: You don’t need front row seats unless you plan to film (which I always do!). We went to Christmas Movie Theme Songs last year and I already have tickets for Christmas carols by candlelight for this year. They are addictive.
