Tipping in the UK: London Travel Tips

Could you be wasting money on every tip you give in London? Or worse yet, are you socially awkward without even knowing it?

If you tip 20% by default when traveling to London, you are not being generous, you are simply a “tourist ATM”.

Although these rules apply to tipping across the whole of the UK, London has its own specific rhythm that you need to be aware of.

As an American living in London for over a decade, I’ve learned that the social rules here are different. My London-born husband is still constantly surprised by the tipping culture in my home state of Florida, where expectations are so high. In the UK, service workers generally receive a higher base salary, meaning the tip is a discretionary bonus for a job well done. It is not a mandatory addition to someone’s salary.

To help, I’ve put together these London travel planning tips to show you how to navigate London’s hotel scene with confidence. And more importantly, they will prevent you from wasting your money during your visit to London.

For reference, if you’re planning your first trip to the UK, that means you’re visiting England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland. However, I assume that most of you plan your trip to London in advance and other countries will not be on your itinerary.

Tipping in the UK: restaurants

In London, the end of a meal does not happen automatically. Unlike in the United States, where a waiter can drop off the check (riddled with happy faces) while you’re still finishing your last bite, London waiters generally won’t bring the bill until you explicitly ask for it.

Once you’ve met their gaze and made the “write in the air” gesture, it’s time to check the receipts. You’re not just checking to make sure you haven’t been double-charged for your wine; you are looking for “discretionary service fees”.

Most mid-to-high end London restaurants automatically add a service charge of 12.5% to the total.

The golden rule

If you see that 12.5% line, you’re done. That East the tip. In London there are no plans to add another 10 or 20% to the existing service charge and there is no need to do so. This is the quickest way to confirm your “Tourist ATM” status.

If no service charge is included, a 10-12% tip is usual for good service.

Remember, because salaries are higher here, 20% is not the benchmark. It’s a extreme outlier.

And because these fees are “discretionary,” you can request their removal if the service was truly poor. This might seem a bit awkward, but it’s the standard way of reporting a bad experience.

Pub protocol: order like a local

When it comes to pubs, tipping in the UK can be a bit confusing. Unlike the United States, where tipping the bartender is almost automatic, tipping is not always expected in a London pub.

If you order at the bar, you don’t need to tip. Most locals simply pay for their drinks without adding anything extra. However, if you received exceptional service or were seated at a table service table, you may want to leave a little something, which is usually 10% of your bill.

A good rule of thumb is to offer to “buy the bartender a drink”, which is a polite way of tipping and will usually be added to your tab as a small amount, such as a few pounds.

Tipping while traveling: taxis and Ubers

The black taxi rule

If you take an iconic London Black Cab, tipping is common but low pressure.

Common practice is to simply “round up” to the nearest pound or pound. If your fare is £18.20, giving the driver £20 and saying “keep the change” is the way to go. It’s a polite nod to their expertise (remember, these drivers have spent years mastering “the knowledge”).

Uber and carpooling

With Uber or other apps, tipping is even less ingrained. Although the app gives you the option to add a tip after the ride, most Londoners only do so if the driver has gone well beyond their expectations.

The “ATM” warning: If you don’t have luggage and it was a standard 10 minute ride across town, no tip is acceptable. Don’t feel like you have to add a tip in the app just because a notification pops up.

To be honest, I have only occasionally tipped for rides to London Heathrow Airport.

Tipping in London hotels

In London, you are not expected to tip housekeeping staff on a daily basis. If you’ve had a week’s stay and the service has been exceptional, leaving a small amount (think £5-£10 in total) at the end of your stay is a nice gesture.

WHAT ABOUT THE CONCIERGE?

You don’t need to tip to get simple directions or a quick restaurant recommendation. (You should use my restaurant guide for this!)

However, if they’ve gone above and beyond, like getting a “full” table at one of London’s best restaurants or finding last-minute theater tickets, a tip of £5 to £10 is a classy way to show your appreciation for their connections.

Hotels

If you haven’t yet booked your hotel for your trip to London, here’s an interactive map to help you get started! It is based on the most central location in the city.

Tipping in the UK: spas and other services

Tipping at spas and salons in London is quite similar to what you might give in the United States, although the amounts are generally lower. If you have received a massage, facial, or other spa treatment, it is customary to tip approximately 10% of the cost of the service. Some people may tip a little higher if they had an exceptional experience. But this is in no way planned.

Likewise, in hair salons, it is polite to tip your stylist, but 10% is usually enough. As with other services, tipping in the UK is appreciated but not obligatory. Most service providers are paid a fair wage, so tips are considered more of a bonus than a necessity.

PakarPBN

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.

In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
